Penrith's position at the foot of the Blue Mountains, in a broad western Sydney basin, gives it some of the hottest and most stagnant air conditions in the metropolitan area. That basin effect traps vehicle emissions and encourages ozone formation on hot, still summer afternoons, making it one of the more ozone-prone parts of Sydney. Bushfire smoke drifting from mountain and rural fires is a further summer hazard. Winters are generally clearer, though cold nights can produce mild temperature inversions. Away from these episodes, background air quality is reasonably good.

Winter brings a quieter risk too: wood-heater smoke pooling on cold, still nights. Sensitive groups should watch forecasts during that period rather than assume year-round conditions apply.

Are air quality levels in Penrith based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
