Innisfail sits amid Queensland's Wet Tropics, where heavy rainfall and dense humidity dominate daily life for much of the year, generally keeping the air remarkably clean and washed. The surrounding cane fields bring seasonal smoke from sugarcane burning between June and December, adding smoky haze on still mornings during harvest. Dry-season months from June to October can also carry drifting smoke from savanna burning and occasional bushfires further inland. Cyclone season, running November to April, brings heavy rain and humidity rather than pollution concerns. Trade winds off the Coral Sea otherwise keep background air quality good most of the year.

When is air pollution at its worst in Innisfail?

Innisfail residents typically notice conditions worsen during the dry season (roughly June to October), when savanna and grass fires across the north send smoke drifting into town on the prevailing trade winds. Come the wet season, smoke fades, replaced by humidity, heavy rain and the odd cyclone. The rest of the year is otherwise good, so it's these months that call for caution.

Are air quality levels in Innisfail based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
