Remote and sparsely populated, Exmouth sits at the tip of the North West Cape where near-constant coastal breezes and an arid, low-humidity climate combine to produce some of the cleanest air found anywhere in the country. There is little local industry or traffic to generate pollution, and the surrounding landscape of scrub and reef offers few sources of dust or smoke under normal conditions. Occasional dust can be stirred by strong winds off the dry interior, and cyclone season brings intense but short-lived weather systems in summer. Outside these episodes, Exmouth's air quality is exceptionally good year-round.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Exmouth right now?

On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Exmouth is good. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 15.6/100. Pollution peaks around 6:00 PM (O3: 15.6/100).

When is air pollution at its worst in Exmouth?

Air in Exmouth is generally clean, but that changes during summer (December-March), when bushfire smoke is the main risk on hot, dry northerly winds. Away from fire season, a consistent onshore breeze generally keeps air quality high. Keeping half an eye on forecasts during that stretch is the practical takeaway otherwise.

Are air quality levels in Exmouth based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
