Famous for having one of the world's largest tidal ranges, Derby sits on mudflats at the edge of the Kimberley coast, where wide open exposure to sea breezes generally keeps the air clean and well ventilated. The dry season, from June to October, brings the main regional air quality concern in the form of smoke from savanna burning, both managed and unplanned, drifting across the surrounding pastoral country. Wet-season months bring heavy humidity, mould risk, and cyclone potential rather than smoke, typically from November through April. Dust can rise briefly during the October to November build-up. Outside these patterns, background air quality remains good.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is air quality bad in Derby right now?

When is air pollution at its worst in Derby?

The least favourable stretch for air quality in Derby is the build-up and dry season stretch, when savanna burning sends a persistent smoky haze across the north from roughly June through October. The wet season flips the script: less smoke, more humidity, storms and cyclone watches. The rest of the year tends to be comfortable, making this the stretch worth watching for smoke-sensitive people.

Are air quality levels in Derby based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
