Famous for its underground homes built to escape the heat, Coober Pedy sits deep in South Australia's arid outback, where dust is the defining air quality issue rather than smoke or humidity. Dust storms can sweep across the open, sparsely vegetated landscape with little warning, driven by the extreme temperature swings typical of desert interiors. Opal mining activity adds a further local source of dust around excavation sites. Humidity remains extremely low year-round, and vegetation is too sparse to generate significant bushfire smoke. Outside dust events, the air here is exceptionally clean, a product of the region's isolation and openness.

When is air pollution at its worst in Coober Pedy?

For Coober Pedy, the recurring rough patch for air quality comes during dust storm events, when strong, dry winds lift loose soil off the surrounding plains. After decent rain, the extra grass growth tends to cure and become fire fuel later on. It's worth checking daily readings during that period, since the rest of the year rarely causes concern.

Are air quality levels in Coober Pedy based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
