As an outback mining town in far-western NSW, Cobar's air quality is shaped above all by dust: wind-driven dust storms sweep across the surrounding semi-arid rangeland, and mining and mineral processing operations add further localised dust to the town's air. The climate's extreme diurnal temperature swings and very low humidity mean there is little moisture to settle particles, so dust events can appear suddenly and clear quickly with the next wind change. Away from these episodes, and given minimal traffic or heavy industry, background air quality is typically very clean.

Frequently Asked Questions
Is air quality bad in Cobar right now?
On 16 July 2026, overall air quality in Cobar is fair. AQI is the main air quality indicator at 37.7/100. Pollution peaks around 7:00 PM (NO2: 37.7/100).
Will air quality be worse tomorrow in Cobar?
On 17 July 2026, air quality conditions in Cobar will be similar to today, with AQI forecast at fair at 36.4/100. Pollution peaks around 11:00 AM (SO2: 36.4/100).
When is air pollution at its worst in Cobar?
Air in Cobar is generally clean, but that changes during dust storm events, when strong, dry winds lift loose soil off the surrounding plains. A second trigger comes after good rains, when the grass growth dries out and can fuel fires later. Timing outdoor activity around this window and checking daily readings helps limit exposure.
Are air quality levels in Cobar based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
