Chinchilla, at the heart of Queensland's Western Downs gas fields and melon-growing country, experiences air quality shaped by a combination of agricultural dust, gas field activity and vehicle movements associated with regional industry. Dry, windy periods raise dust from surrounding cropping land, while the drier late-winter to spring fire season brings bushfire smoke risk ahead of seasonal rains. Being further inland, the town gets less consistent coastal ventilation than towns nearer the coast, allowing some summer haze to linger on still days. Overall, background air quality remains generally good outside these episodes.

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere.
