Bairnsdale, gateway to Victoria's East Gippsland, has experienced some of the state's most severe bushfire smoke episodes, most notably during the 2019-20 Black Summer fires when surrounding forests burned for weeks and blanketed the town in hazardous haze. Outside major fire events, the town's air quality is generally good, supported by its river-plain setting and light industrial base. Winter nights bring typical wood heater smoke, occasionally trapped under cool, still conditions. Agricultural activity in the surrounding valley contributes minor seasonal dust. Bushfire smoke risk remains the dominant concern given the extensive forest cover nearby.
