Ayr sits in the Burdekin, one of Queensland's major sugarcane-growing districts, where cane fire smoke is a defining feature of the local air quality calendar, with burning typically occurring during the harvest season from around June through to December ahead of milling. Savanna burning across the broader dry tropics adds further smoke through the dry season. The wet season from November to April brings high humidity and associated dampness, plus a cyclone risk. Outside these cane-burning and wet-season periods, trade winds generally deliver clean, good-quality air to this coastal sugar town.

When is air pollution at its worst in Ayr?

In Ayr, air quality typically takes its biggest hit during the cooler dry months (June-October), when land managers and graziers burn off savanna country and smoke haze becomes a regular visitor. The wet season flips the script: less smoke, more humidity, storms and cyclone watches. It's worth checking daily readings during that period, since the rest of the year rarely causes concern.

Are air quality levels in Ayr based on measurements or forecasts?

It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns. CAMS bases its forecast on satellite measurements of particles and chemical compounds in the atmosphere. Airmine’s services were developed with support from the European Space Agency (ESA)’s Business Applications and Space Solutions (BASS) team.
