Tirana's air quality faces significant challenges from the rapid motorisation that has transformed Albania's capital since the 1990s, with vehicle traffic on the Rruga e Kavajës and surrounding ring road generating elevated NOₓ alongside residential wood and coal burning. The surrounding Dajti Mountain and the Albanian Alps to the north partially enclose the Tirana plain, concentrating emissions under frequent winter anticyclonic conditions.
