Elbasan's air quality faces significant challenges from the former Metalurgjike Elbasan steel and chemical complex legacy generating elevated heavy metal particulates and industrial background alongside vehicle traffic on the SH3 and A3 motorway in this central Albanian industrial city. The Shkumbin river valley's topographic enclosure between the Skanderbeg and Jablanica mountains concentrates industrial and vehicle emissions under winter inversions throughout the heating season.
