Durrës's air quality reflects its position as Albania's main Adriatic port city, with the Port of Durrës generating shipping and ferry emissions alongside vehicle traffic on the SH2 and the A1 motorway from Tirana. The Adriatic Sea provides maritime ventilation on westerly winds, while the surrounding Durrës hills and the Albanian lowland plain create topographic variation, and vehicle emissions from the rapidly growing post-communist motorisation and industrial development represent the primary ongoing air quality challenge throughout the year.
