Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this site in Tulelake is open grassland, with a good deal of farmland. There is plenty of grass pollen here too. Field margins, fallow strips and pasture around the farmland add further grass and weed pollen. Pollen also travels on the wind, so vegetation in the wider surroundings adds to local levels as well.
Through the year, grass pollen dominates, building from mid-spring to a peak around early summer and lasting until late summer. The season closes with a lower weed peak from early summer into early fall, mostly from roadside and field-edge plants. Winters average around freezing and summers around 20°C, with most rain falling in the cooler months.

Does pollen in Tulelake come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Tulelake based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Tulelake, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
