Local Environmental Conditions
This part of Truckee is heavily wooded, with some open grassland. Close to running water, riverside vegetation contributes to what is in the air. Oak is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with juniper also present. Grasses add a sizeable share of the local pollen. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
The pollen year opens with oak and juniper, peaking around late spring. The grass season runs from mid-spring to late summer, with its high point around early summer. Later, weeds flowering on open and disturbed ground keep some pollen in the air from early summer into early fall. Here, winters average around freezing and summers around 20°C, with most rain falling in the cooler months.

Does pollen in Truckee come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Truckee based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Truckee, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
