Local Environmental Conditions
The center of Sunnyside-Tahoe City is heavily wooded, with some open grassland. Oak and poplar are among the allergenic trees nearby. Grass pollen is a substantial part of the local mix as well. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load. Gaps in the canopy, trails and forest edges give grasses and herbs room to grow.
Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and oak and poplar are in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer and keep pollen in the air into late summer. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall. Rain is heaviest in winter, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels.

Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Sunnyside-Tahoe City based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Sunnyside-Tahoe City, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
