Local Environmental Conditions
Along the damp banks, hazel and willow release some of the year's first tree pollen, in the vicinity. Woodland dominated by oak and birch, with birch a leading regional tree-pollen allergen; this sits a short distance from here. A stretch of mown parkland where turf and ornamental trees feed local grass and ragweed pollen, just outside the immediate area.
Hazel and willow near the water open the pollen calendar early, reaching its high point sometime in late winter or early spring. Further into spring, the area's oak and birch stands drive the pollen count, typically landing in April and May. By late spring, grass pollen is climbing steadily toward a June high point, before ragweed takes over as the dominant allergen from mid-August through October.

Does pollen in Staten Island come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Staten Island based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Staten Island, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.

Understanding the Scale
The 0–100 scores represent risk levels, not direct measurements of pollen or air pollutant concentrations. Higher scores indicate higher risk. Pollen and air quality use different thresholds.
