Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this part of South Lake Tahoe is woodland, with some open grassland and open water. With South Lake nearby, lakeside trees such as willow and poplar along its shore contribute to the local mix. The leading allergenic tree nearby is juniper, with poplar and willow close behind. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside mugwort among the weeds.
Tree pollen comes first, with juniper, poplar and willow in flower from early spring into mid-spring. Grass pollen builds from mid-spring, peaks around early summer and stays noticeable until late summer. Later in the year, mugwort adds weed pollen from midsummer into early fall. Locally, temperatures range from around freezing in the coldest month to around 20°C in the warmest, with most rain falling in the cooler months.

Does pollen in South Lake Tahoe come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in South Lake Tahoe based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in South Lake Tahoe, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
