Local Environmental Conditions
This site in Snowmass Village is heavily wooded. Poplar is among the allergenic trees nearby. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load. Clearings, tracks and woodland edges let grasses and other flowering plants grow among the trees. Much of the pollen in dense woodland is released high in the canopy, where the wind carries it easily.
Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 5°C and poplar is in full flower. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 15°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. By mid-fall, pollen levels are low again. Day to day, sunshine and wind lift the counts, while a spell of rain can bring them down sharply.

Does pollen in Snowmass Village come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Snowmass Village based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Snowmass Village, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
