Local Environmental Conditions
Woodland and open grassland share the area around the heart of Shakopee, plus a good deal of built-up land. With the Minnesota River nearby, riverside vegetation along its banks contributes to the local mix. The surrounding woodland makes trees an important local pollen source. Grass pollen is significant here, and ragweed contributes weed pollen.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in mid-spring. Grasses take over in early summer and keep pollen in the air into early fall. Later, ragweed keeps weed pollen in the air from late summer into mid-fall. Rain is heaviest in summer, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around freezing, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Shakopee come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Shakopee based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Shakopee, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
