Local Environmental Conditions
The waterway's edge supports hazel and willow, species known for potent, wind-carried pollen, close enough to matter, at 200m. Nearby, roughly 350 meters to the north or south of here, tree cover made up mostly of oak and birch, both significant spring allergen sources. Located close enough to matter, at 50m, this area has a park where mown turf grass and ornamental trees add grass and ragweed pollen.
Water-edge hazel and willow are usually the first allergenic trees active here, hitting its peak before most trees have even budded, around late winter into March. Oak and birch in the woodland come next, through the heart of spring, topping out in the April-to-May stretch. Grass pollen counts rise through late spring, reaching their peak around June, and ragweed later takes the lead from mid-August through October.

Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Shaker Heights based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.

Understanding the Scale
The 0–100 scores represent risk levels, not direct measurements of pollen or air pollutant concentrations. Higher scores indicate higher risk. Pollen and air quality use different thresholds.
