Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this site in Saint Paul is woodland, with some built-up land and open grassland. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Allergenic trees nearby include maple, oak and poplar. Grass pollen is plentiful, while ragweed leads among the weeds. Ragweed is unusually common here compared with most other locations, making it a particularly important local pollen source.
Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 5°C and maple, oak and poplar are in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Ragweed brings the strongest peak of the year from late summer into mid-fall. Summer is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.
