Local Environmental Conditions
The area around this site in Old Malibu is mostly open grassland, with a good deal of scrubland and some woodland. Of the allergenic trees nearby, oak matters most, while plane tree also contributes. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and mugwort and ragweed are the main weed sources. Mugwort is unusually common here compared with most other locations, making it a particularly important local pollen source.
Tree pollen peaks in early spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and oak and plane tree are in full flower. Then come the grasses, strongest in late spring and fading by mid-fall. The most intense period comes through summer, when mugwort and ragweed are in flower. Winter is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.

Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Old Malibu based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.

This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
