Local Environmental Conditions
Woodland makes up around 37% of the area near the heart of Olana State Historic Site, with a good deal of built-up land. Maple stands out as the main allergenic tree nearby. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside ragweed among the weeds. In the built-up parts of the area, street trees, gardens and park lawns add to the local mix.
Maple leads the season in mid-spring, as temperatures climb to around 10°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Grasses take over in early summer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. Ragweed brings a final peak from late summer into mid-fall. Warm, damp weather from early summer into early fall also raises mold spore levels. By late fall, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Olana State Historic Site come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Olana State Historic Site based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Olana State Historic Site, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
