Local Environmental Conditions
The landscape around the center of Occidental is heavily wooded. Oak is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with cypress and hazel also present. Grass pollen is significant here, and plantain contributes weed pollen. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load. Clearings, tracks and woodland edges let grasses and other flowering plants grow among the trees.
Cypress and hazel open the pollen season in early spring. Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and oak is in full flower. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Later, plantain keeps weed pollen in the air from late spring into early fall.

Does pollen in Occidental come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Occidental based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Occidental, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
