Local Environmental Conditions
This part of Mount Crested Butte is surrounded mainly by open grassland, with some woodland. The damp ground beside running water nearby supports trees such as willow and poplar, adding to local pollen. Allergenic trees nearby include poplar and willow. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and mugwort and pigweed are the main weed sources.
Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 5°C and poplar and willow are in full flower. Grass pollen follows, peaking in midsummer and easing off by late summer. Mugwort and pigweed bring a final peak from midsummer into early fall. By mid-fall, as temperatures fall to around freezing, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Mount Crested Butte come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Mount Crested Butte based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Mount Crested Butte, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
