Local Environmental Conditions
The center of Montevideo is surrounded mainly by woodland, with a good deal of built-up land and some open grassland. Running water nearby means riverside vegetation is part of the local pollen picture. With this much woodland around, trees are an important local pollen source. In the built-up parts of the area, street trees, gardens and park lawns add to the local mix.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in mid-spring. Grass pollen follows, peaking in early summer and easing off by early fall. Rain is heaviest in summer, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around freezing, pollen levels are low again. Actual levels on any given day depend on the weather, with dry, breezy days the worst and wet days the mildest.

Does pollen in Montevideo come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Montevideo based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Montevideo, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
