Local Environmental Conditions
Farmland and open grassland share the area around this part of Mead. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside pigweed among the weeds. Field margins, fallow strips and pasture around the farmland add further grass and weed pollen.
Grasses take over in early summer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Pigweed brings a final peak from early summer into early fall. Spring is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Mead come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Mead based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Mead, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
