Local Environmental Conditions
This part of Mammoth Lakes is heavily wooded, with a good deal of open grassland. Woodland on all sides makes trees an important local pollen source. Grasses are also a significant pollen source here. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds. Undergrowth, clearings and woodland edges add smaller amounts of grass and herb pollen.
Over the course of the year, tree pollen comes first, peaking around late spring. Grasses are next, reaching their height around midsummer and tailing off by early fall. Weeds take the season into its final stretch, adding modest amounts of pollen from midsummer into mid-fall. Locally, temperatures range from a few degrees below freezing in the coldest month to around 20°C in the warmest.

Does pollen in Mammoth Lakes come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Mammoth Lakes based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Mammoth Lakes, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
