Local Environmental Conditions
Around 49% of the area near the center of Lucerne Valley is scrubland, with a good deal of bare ground. Grasses matter a great deal here, and pigweed is the main weed source. Locally, scrubland contributes pollen from shrubs, grasses and herbs. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
Then come the grasses, strongest in late spring and fading by early fall. Pigweed brings a final peak from early summer into early fall. In this dry climate, pollen can linger in the air for long spells without rain. Actual levels on any given day depend on the weather, with dry, breezy days the worst and wet days the mildest.

Does pollen in Lucerne Valley come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Lucerne Valley based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Lucerne Valley, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
