Local Environmental Conditions
The area around the center of London is mostly woodland, with a good deal of built-up land and some open grassland. So much tree cover makes trees an important source of pollen locally. Grasses and weeds such as plantain round out the local mix. In the built-up parts of the area, street trees, gardens and park lawns add to the local mix.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in mid-spring. Grasses take over in late spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. The season closes with plantain from mid-spring into early fall. By early winter, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again. Dry, sunny and breezy weather raises levels within each period, and steady rain brings them down.
