Local Environmental Conditions
Built-up land and scrubland share the area around Lake Los Angeles, plus some bare ground. Along a watercourse nearby, trees, shrubs and reeds grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. Grass pollen is plentiful, while pigweed and ragweed lead among the weeds. In the immediate area, scrubland contributes pollen from shrubs, grasses and herbs.
Grasses take over in late spring, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Pigweed and ragweed bring a final peak from early summer into early fall. Rain is heaviest in winter, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels. Within each of these periods, warm, dry and windy days push levels higher, while rain clears the air.

Does pollen in Lake Los Angeles come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Lake Los Angeles based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Lake Los Angeles, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
