Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around Imperial Beach is built-up land, with some open grassland and wetland. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Willow is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with poplar also present. Ragweed is unusually common here compared with most other locations, making it a particularly important local pollen source.
Willow and poplar lead the season in early spring, as temperatures climb to around 15°C, and tree pollen reaches its peak. Grasses take over in early summer and keep pollen in the air into early fall. Pigweed and ragweed bring the strongest peak of the year from early summer into early fall. Spring is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.

Does pollen in Imperial Beach come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Imperial Beach based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Imperial Beach, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
