Local Environmental Conditions
This location in Hinsdale is surrounded mainly by woodland, with a good deal of built-up land. Of the allergenic trees nearby, oak matters most, while maple also contributes. Grasses are a major source, with ragweed and plantain adding to the weed pollen load. In the built-up parts of the area, street trees, gardens and park lawns add to the local mix.
Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and oak and maple are in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. The season closes with ragweed and plantain from late summer into mid-fall. Rain is heaviest in summer, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels.

Does pollen in Hinsdale come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Hinsdale based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Hinsdale, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
