Local Environmental Conditions
The area around Hernando Beach is heavily wooded. Lawns and planted trees in a nearby park add to local grass and tree pollen. Among allergenic trees nearby, oak leads, followed by pecan. Grasses are a major source, with pigweed and ragweed adding to the weed pollen load. Clearings, tracks and woodland edges let grasses and other flowering plants grow among the trees.
Tree pollen peaks in early spring, when the weather warms to around 20°C and oak and pecan are in full flower. Grasses take over in early spring and keep pollen in the air into mid-fall. The season closes with pigweed and ragweed from early summer into early fall. Warm, damp weather from early summer into early winter also raises mold spore levels.

Does pollen in Hernando Beach come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Hernando Beach based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Hernando Beach, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
