Local Environmental Conditions
This site in Freetown is heavily wooded, with some open grassland. Locally, the surrounding woods make trees an important source. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds. Undergrowth, clearings and woodland edges add smaller amounts of grass and herb pollen. Much of the pollen in dense woodland is released high in the canopy, where the wind carries it easily.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking in mid-spring. Grass pollen follows, peaking in early summer and easing off by early fall. Weeds on open ground add a smaller late peak from early summer into early fall. Mold spores join in from early summer into early fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 10°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Freetown come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Freetown based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Freetown, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
