Local Environmental Conditions
This part of Escanaba is surrounded mainly by open grassland, with a good deal of built-up land and some woodland. With a watercourse close by, riverside vegetation contributes to the local mix. Grasses add a sizeable share of the local pollen. Street trees, private gardens and mown lawns add to local pollen in the more built-up surroundings.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in late spring. Then come the grasses, strongest in midsummer and fading by early fall. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall. In warm, humid weather from midsummer into early fall, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain. By late fall, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Escanaba come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Escanaba based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Escanaba, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
