Local Environmental Conditions
The heart of Day Valley is surrounded mainly by woodland, which covers around 86% of the nearby area. Among allergenic trees nearby, oak is the main source. Grasses are a major source, with mugwort and plantain adding to the weed pollen load. Gaps in the canopy, trails and forest edges give grasses and herbs room to grow.
Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and oak is in full flower. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 20°C, and their pollen lingers into early fall. Later, mugwort and plantain keep weed pollen in the air through summer. Winter is the wettest time of year, and heavy showers can bring short breaks in pollen.

Does pollen in Day Valley come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Day Valley based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Day Valley, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
