Local Environmental Conditions
The landscape around this part of Crested Butte is heavily wooded. The damp ground beside running water nearby supports trees, shrubs and reeds, adding to local pollen. Woodland on all sides makes trees an important local pollen source. Grass pollen adds noticeably to the overall load. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds.
Flowering trees bring the first pollen of the year in late spring. Grasses take over in midsummer, with temperatures around 15°C, and their pollen lingers into late summer. A smaller weed peak follows from early summer into early fall. By mid-fall, as temperatures fall to around freezing, pollen levels are low again.

Does pollen in Crested Butte come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Crested Butte based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Crested Butte, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
