Local Environmental Conditions
This site in Creede is surrounded mainly by woodland, with a good deal of open grassland. Around here, the surrounding woods make trees an important source; open grassland adds grass and weed pollen. Roadside verges and patches of open ground provide further room for grasses and weeds. Undergrowth, clearings and woodland edges add smaller amounts of grass and herb pollen.
The year opens with tree pollen, which is highest around early summer. From early summer, grass pollen rises to a peak around midsummer before easing off by early fall. Later, weeds flowering on open and disturbed ground keep some pollen in the air from midsummer into mid-fall. Winters average well below freezing, around -10°C and summers around 15°C, with rain spread fairly evenly through the year.

Does pollen in Creede come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Creede based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Creede, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
