Local Environmental Conditions
This part of Covelo is heavily wooded, with a good deal of open grassland. With a stream or river close by, riverside vegetation contributes to the local mix. Locally, tree cover makes trees an important source; open grassland adds grass and weed pollen. Grasses along roadsides, verges and open ground also add to the overall pollen load.
Tree pollen comes first, peaking around mid-spring. The grass season runs from mid-spring to midsummer, with its high point around late spring. The season closes with a lower weed peak from early summer into early fall, mostly from roadside and field-edge plants. Here, temperatures range from around 5°C in the coldest month to around 25°C in the warmest, with most rain falling in the cooler months.

Does pollen in Covelo come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Covelo based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Covelo, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
