Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this part of Charlotte is woodland, with a good deal of built-up land. Oak is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with maple also present. Grasses also feature strongly, alongside ragweed and plantain among the weeds. In the built-up parts of the area, street trees, gardens and park lawns add to the local mix.
Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 15°C and oak and maple are in full flower. Then come the grasses, strongest in late spring and fading by early fall. Later, ragweed and plantain keep weed pollen in the air from late summer into mid-fall. By early winter, as temperatures fall to around 5°C, pollen levels are low again.

Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Charlotte based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Charlotte, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
