Local Environmental Conditions
The area around this part of Butler Beach is heavily wooded. Oak is the most prominent allergenic tree nearby, with juniper also present. Grass pollen is significant here, and pigweed contributes weed pollen. Undergrowth, clearings and woodland edges add smaller amounts of grass and herb pollen. Much of the pollen in dense woodland is released high in the canopy, where the wind carries it easily.
Tree pollen peaks in early spring, when the weather warms to around 20°C and oak and juniper are in full flower. Then come the grasses, strongest in mid-spring and fading by mid-fall. Pigweed brings a final peak from early summer into early fall. In warm, humid weather from early summer into early winter, mold spores add to the mix, especially after rain.

Does pollen in Butler Beach come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Butler Beach based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Butler Beach, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
