Local Environmental Conditions
Almost 40% of the area near the center of Barañáin is built-up land, with a good deal of farmland and some woodland. The allergenic tree mix nearby includes ash, maple and oak. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and plantain and pigweed are the main weed sources. Field margins, fallow strips and pasture around the farmland add further grass and weed pollen.
Tree pollen peaks in mid-spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and ash, maple and oak are in full flower. Grasses take over in early summer and keep pollen in the air into late summer. Plantain and pigweed bring a final peak from late spring into early fall. Mold spores join in from early summer into early fall, when damp, warm spells let them thrive.

Does pollen in Barañáin come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Barañáin based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Barañáin, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
