Ayolas lies on the Paraná River in southern Paraguay at the Yacyretá hydroelectric complex, where native riparian forest, natural grassland, and reservoir shoreline vegetation natural grassland and reservoir shoreline vegetation dominate locally, and grass from nearby Misiones farmland extends exposure through the spring and summer peak. The wet season that follows regularly interrupts pollen counts.
