Altamura's pollen season opens in January with olive and almond, making it one of the earliest seasons in southern Italy. Olive and almond pollen from the surrounding Murge plateau farmland dominates spring exposure exceptionally. The flat, open limestone plateau allows pollen to disperse widely under the hot, dry Adriatic climate and grass peaks through May and June before the summer ends the season abruptly.
