Florence's air quality faces the Arno valley's topographic enclosure between the Apennine ridges, with vehicle and tourist bus emissions from Italy's most visited art destination combining with the valley's natural pollution trap to generate sustained elevated NO₂ and PM2.5 during winter inversions. The Chianti hills and Fiesole ridge provide partial topographic shelter, while summer Etesian winds offer periodic ventilation relief across the historic basin.

Are air quality levels in Florence based on measurements or forecasts?
It is forecasts derived by downscaling forecasts provided by EU’s Copernicus Atmosphere Monitoring Service (CAMS) by taking into account local conditions such as traffic patterns.
