Local Environmental Conditions
The area around this part of Nanaimo is mostly built-up land, with some open water and woodland. Of the allergenic trees nearby, oak matters most, while maple and alder also contribute. Beyond the trees, grasses matter a great deal, and plantain is the main weed source. Around here, street trees, parks and lawns are the main sources in the built-up parts.
First to flower is alder, in early spring. Tree pollen peaks in late spring, when the weather warms to around 10°C and oak and maple are in full flower. Grasses take over in midsummer and keep pollen in the air into early fall. Later, plantain keeps weed pollen in the air from late spring into early fall. Rain is heaviest in winter, often giving short breaks from high pollen levels.

Does pollen in Nanaimo come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Nanaimo based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Nanaimo, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
