Ouricuri commands the Pernambuco sertão on the Araripe plateau edge as the main commercial hub for the carnauba wax industry, where native caatinga scrub, carnauba wax palm, and sparse drought-adapted trees are the main pollen sources. The very semi-arid climate produces an extremely compressed wet season from February to May, while the long dry season strongly concentrates pollen production and the open northeastern sertão allows very wide pollen dispersal throughout.
