Ilhéus lines the Bahia southern Atlantic coast as the capital of Brazil's cacao country, where native Atlantic Forest remnants, cacao plantation trees, and restinga coastal scrub are the main pollen sources. The tropical climate supports year-round pollen production, while the very wet coastal Atlantic Forest climate provides very frequent rainfall interruptions and the cacao plantation contributes a distinctive and commercially important local pollen source throughout.
