Local Environmental Conditions
Most of the area around this site in Toll is open grassland, with a good deal of woodland and some built-up land. Along a stream or river nearby, trees, shrubs and reeds grow in the damper ground and add their own pollen. So much tree cover makes trees an important source of pollen locally. Grasses are also a significant pollen source here.
Temperatures stay between about 20°C and 30°C through the year, so plants release pollen in most months. Levels tend to be highest in drier spells, especially around September. During the rainy season, frequent heavy downpours wash much of the pollen out of the air. Grasses flower again and again through the year and are the most constant source.

Does pollen in Toll come from nearby or far away?
Studies show that most pollen exposure (often 70–90%) comes from nearby sources, such as local trees and vegetation. A good pollen forecast therefore depends on accurately representing local vegetation. Pollen can travel long distances, but this usually matters only early in the season or during specific wind events.
Are pollen levels in Toll based on measurements or forecasts?
Pollen data is often misunderstood. Most "pollen levels" are not real-time measurements, but forecasts.
Direct pollen measurements are typically delayed by 1-2 days because they require manual analysis. To show current conditions in Toll, modern forecasts combine recent measurements, weather data, and information about local vegetation.
This allows us to estimate pollen levels for today and the coming days, not just report the past.
